Ah, this should be a good night, then. A real favourite band of mine in one of my favourite venues and the
sun's been out all day making this a perfect evening weatherwise.
I have to say that the mini heatwave and my general tiredness could make me a little lethargic and not at
all responsive to the upbeat folk punk noise that are The Levellers. Still, a couple of Smirnoff Ice's
should get me in the mood and so that is what happened.
The Wedgewood Rooms seemed to be as hot inside as the day had been outside. I'm sure that the bar's
takings would have been more that usual. My lagers were going down like water which is probably why
I don't remember as much of this gig as I would have liked. Still, the bits I do remember were very
good, and I mean very good.
I went into this concert not really thinking that new album, '
Truth And Lies', was anything other than
OK. When they played a couple of the songs from it, my opinion of the said album improved. I particuarly
enjoyed 'The Last Man Alive'.
And of course, there were the classic Levellers numbers. 'One Way',' Beautiful Day' and particuarly
'15 Years' had everyone in the audience singing every word. The gig coincided with Mark Chadwick's
birthday, which got a few mentions on the night.
Well, the gig went very well and I certainly left a happy bloke. I had a case of the munchies, though.
Luckily, The Wedgewood Rooms are surrounded by a number of fast food outlets so I was able to satisfy
my cravings with a bit of the old elephants leg (or a kebab as you might know it as!). After that , I
was fortunate enough to meet Jeremy Leveller (the bassist - you know the one with the dreadlocks that
always seems to be in the Levellers live action photos!) who turned out to be a very pleasant and
polite bloke. I certainly look forward to seeing The Levellers again.
